The Fastest and Most On-time Connections in the Czech Republic
In the 2011 timetable, SC Pendolino connections between Prague and Ostrava remain in the fastest trains in the Czech Republic with a maximum speed of 160 km/h and with an average speed (including stops) of 120 km/h between Prague Main Station and Ostrava-Svinov. Last year they were also the most on-time trains in the Czech Republic, matching the timetable 91.8% of the time.
Since their introduction, Pendolino high-speed trains have been a synonym for fast travel on the Prague – Pardubice – Olomouc – Ostrava route, and have gradually shortened travel times to a record 2 hours 56 minutes between Prague Main Station and Ostrava’s Svinov Station, or 3 hours and 5 minutes to Ostrava Main Station. The average speed in the Praha hl.n. – Ostrava-Svinov segment, including stops in Pardubice and Olomouc, and at a lower speed in certain segments through a corridor that has not yet been modernised, e.g. near the Orlice River between Choceň and Ústí nad Orlicí, is 120 km/h.
The Pendolino is also the fastest connection between Prague and Brno, where it is operated for the SC Slovenská strela connection. It travels this 255-kilometre line in 2 hours and 23 minutes at an average speed of 107 km/h, despite speed restrictions in the Orlice and Svitavy Valleys.
Pendolinos are also the most on-time trains in the Czech Republic. Last year they matched the timetable 91.8% of the time, which is 0.7% better than the traditionally most on-time regional transport. This is also a very strong figure compared to foreign railways, where long-distance trains match the timetable some 10 to 15 percentage points less than SC Pendolino trains.
Among the other very fast trains in the Czech Republic are EuroCity, InterCity and Expres connections operating in modernised corridors. Their maximum speed can be up to 160 km/h. Among the fastest routes are connections between Ostrava-Svinov and Břeclav with an average speed (including stops) of 101 km/h, between Prague and Ostrava-Svinov with an average speed of 97 km/h, between Prague and Břeclav via Brno with an average speed of 96 km/h, and between Praha-Holešovice and Děčín with an average speed of 93 km/h. By deploying new high-performance locomotives and modernised carriages, the average speed of these connections will increase gradually, and the number of trains with a maximum speed of 160 km/h will continue to increase.
